The keys to improved performance and efficiency are:

• Direct cooling of a metal condenser coil with refrigerant from the compressor. This leads to pull-down times of just minutes while using far less electricity than a recirculating chiller.
• Replacing a rotating flask with an upright, stationary flask which is stirred with an overhead stirrer and heated on a heating mantle. The direct heating of the flask is more energy efficient, the upright flask allows you to use the full 50L volume, and the stirring is more energy efficient than rotating a large flask. Having a stationary evaporation flask also allows a drain for convenient collection of residual product – something which traditional rotary evaporators cannot do!
