Application
Chelator of divalent cations. Inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, that require divalent cations for activity.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has been used along with Na2HPO4 and citric acid for preparing Na2EDTA-McIlvaine buffer. Aqueous solution of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has also been used for photocatalytic hydrogen production
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate is a widely used chelator of divalent cations like Ca+2 and inhibits metal ion-dependent proteases such as calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. EDTA also acts as a chelator of the zinc ion in the active site of metalloproteases; thus it inhibits metalloproteases that requires zinc for activity. Additionally, EDTA prevents platelet aggregation and is a preferred anticoagulant for platelet counts.
