Application
Xanthine has been used in the measurement of the activity of superoxide dismutase by the xanthine-oxidase-cytochrome c reduction method. It has also been used as a substrate for the measurement of xanthine oxidase activity in different types of milk
Biochem/physiol Actions
Xanthine and xanthine oxidase are used to generate superoxide radicals to measure the activity of superoxide dismutase. Xanthine is a precursor metabolite to uric acid in purine metabolism. It has been noted as a biomarker of conditions such as gout.
General description
Natural sources of xanthine or its derivatives include animal organs, yeast, potatoes, coffee beans, and tea. Xanthine is a purine that is produced from several different precursors in the purine metabolic pathway: deamination of guanine-by-guanine deaminase and conversion of hypoxanthine by xanthine oxidoreductase.
