α-Methylstyrene (AMS) is used in the synthesis of (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic copolymer)/(α-methylstyrene-acrylonitrile copolymer).

General description

AMS is a main byproduct of the manufacture of phenol and acetone using cumene (isopropyl benzene). Good yields of this monomer can be obtained from cumene by dehydrogenation.
