Lithium cobalt(III) oxide (LiCoO₂) can be used as a cathode material with a specific capacity of ~274 mAhg⁻¹ for the fabrication of lithium-ion batteries. Commercially, these LiCoO₂ fabricated Li-ion batteries can be used in a majority of smartphones. LiCoO₂ can also be used in the formation of fuel cells.
