This week we commemorate World Day for Health and Safety in the Workplace. Celebrated annually on 28th April, this day serves as a global reminder of the importance of prioritising the well-being of employees in all occupational settings. This year we’ll be observing this event by turning our attention to the laboratory environment.

Laboratories are dynamic settings where research, experimentation, and innovation thrive, but they also harbour numerous potential hazards. While health and safety risks are constantly assessed and mitigated, we wanted to take this opportunity to bring into the spotlight five crucial yet often overlooked aspects of safety within laboratory environments.  

1. Ergonomics:

Overlooked ergonomic hazards in the lab include improper workstation setup, repetitive tasks, lifting heavy objects, standing for prolonged periods of time (e.g. during pipetting or microscope use), inadequate lighting etc, all of which can lead to discomfort, injuries, or musculoskeletal disorders among lab workers.

2. Noise Exposure:

Exposure to high levels of noise from equipment such as centrifuges or autoclaves can cause hearing damage over time. Implementing measures such as noise-reducing enclosures or providing ear protection is often overlooked but necessary.

3. Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) Maintenance:

Regular maintenance and certification of BSCs are essential to ensure their effectiveness in containing biohazards and protecting laboratory personnel. Neglecting BSC maintenance can compromise safety and contamination control.

4. Chemical Spill Response Training:

Proper training in responding to chemical spills is often overlooked, leading to delays or incorrect actions during emergencies. Regular spill response drills and training sessions are essential to ensure a swift and effective response.

5. Chemical Storage Compatibility:

Storing chemicals according to their compatibility groups and segregation requirements is crucial to prevent reactions or hazards. Neglecting proper chemical storage practices can lead to accidents, spills, or exposure to toxic substances.
