Species within the Bacteroides genus are Gram-negative, obligate anaerobic bacteria and are a predominant species in the mammalian gastrointestinal flora. Bacteroides are involved in a number of metabolic activities in the colon, including fermentation of carbohydrates and biotransformation of bile acids and other steroids. Bacteroides occupy a significant portion of the normal flora but are responsible for around 80% of anaerobic clinical infections.
