Biochem/physiol Actions
Protein arginine methyltransferase 6 (PRMT6) catalyze the formation of asymmetric ω-NG,NG -dimethylarginine residues. In addition, PRMT6 show automethylation activity, which is unique among the members of PRMT family. PRMT6 mediates cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-triggered apoptosis and inflammation via di-methylation H3 arginine 2 (H3R2me2a) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). PRMT6 plays a crucial role in various physiological processes such as transcriptional regulation, DNA repair and human immunodeficiency virus pathogenesis. Upregulated expression of the enzyme might be favorable for tumor growth and progression. Overexpression of PRMT6 has been observed in various type of malignancies including breast, cervix, bladder, prostate and lung cancer.
General description
Protein arginine methyltransferase 6 (PRMT6) is a 41.9kDa protein with 375 amino acids. It is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 1. It belongs to type I enzyme, which is a subclass of PRMT family. PRMT6 is localized exclusively in nucleus.Human PRMT6 (GenBank Accession No. NM_018137), amino-acids 2-375 (end), with N-terminal His-tag, MW=43kDa, expressed in Escherichia coli.
