Biochem/physiol Actions
p38γ is a key protein of the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) pathway and is involved in cell differentiation, growth, cycle and apoptosis and inflammation. It is essential for normal localization of polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) at the kinetochore. This protein facilitates mitotic cell viability and suppresses chromosomal instability. Studies suggest that this protein negatively controls the expression of GLUT4 (glucose transporter) and the uptake of glucose mediated by contraction in adult skeletal muscles.
General description
p38γ, commonly known as MAPK12 (mitogen-activated protein kinase 12), is one of the four isoforms of the p38 MAPK family. This isoform shows predominant expression in skeletal muscle and is controlled by exercise.
