Biochem/physiol Actions

Evidence strongly indicates that Dkk-1 protein functions as a potent inhibitor of the Wnt signaling pathway to enable appropriate positioning and development of the embryonic brain and other organ structures. hDkk-1 protein also has a pro-apoptotic function.

General description

The human Dkk-1 (hDkk-1) gene, a transcriptional target of the p53 tumor suppressor, encodes a powerful inhibitor of the Wnt signaling pathway and regulates the spatial patterning/morphogenesis of the mammalian central nervous system. The Dkk-1 gene, also called Dickkopf-1 , is a prototype member of a recently identified gene family that encodes secreted glycoproteins that control cell fate and neural patterning during embryonic development. This gene is located on human chromosome 10q.
