2-[3-(2H-Benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]ethyl methacrylate can be used in the following applications: •It is copolymerized on the cotton fabric along with 2-hydroxy-4-acryloyloxybenzophenone via admicellar polymerization. This process provides the cotton fabric with complete UV protection.•It is used as a monomer in synthesizing fluoroalkyl end-capped oligomers with good surface-active properties.•It is also used as a UV absorber (UVAs) in intraocular lenses.

General description

It is capable of absorbing ultraviolet radiation (UV) and dissipate the energy in the form of heat, in sub-picosecond time scale. For the benzotriazole class of UV absorbers, the mechanism of excited-state deactivation is due to an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer.
