General description

ZNF423, also known as Zinc finger protein 423, Olf1/EBF-associated zinc finger protein, hOAZ, or Smad and Olf-interacting zinc finger protein, and encoded by the gene ZNF423/KIAA0760/NPHP14/OAZ, is a transcription factor that can both act as an activator or a repressor depending on the context. ZNF423 plays a central role in BMP signaling and olfactory neurogenesis. ZNF423 acts as a transcriptional repressor via its interaction with EBF1, a transcription factor involved in terminal olfactory receptor neurons differentiation. ZNF423 is involved in olfactory neurogenesis by participating in a developmental switch that regulates the transition from differentiation to maturation in olfactory receptor neurons and it controls the proliferation and differentiation of neural precursors in cerebellar vermis formation. ZNF423 is expressed in many organs including the brain, lung, skeletal muscle and heart in both fetal and adult states. Defects in ZNF423 cause the genetic kidney disease nephronophthisis and the neurological disorder called Joubert syndrome.
